ARE THERE ANY ECO-FRIENDLY POSTAL/MAIL BAGS?

January 19, 2021 3 min read

PROTECTING PEOPLE, PROTECTING THE PLANET

While our products primarily focus on personal health and the protection of people, from day one we have been determined to maintain the highest environmental standards for our business. The importance of this ethos is etched into our brand slogan: “Protecting people, protecting the planet”. Protexa develops re-usable products to combat the throw-away waste of disposables. Our Eco-Mask range also incorporates exclusively natural dyes and treatment, which we are soon looking to expand across our entire product range.

More importantly, as an online retailer, packaging is a fundamental part of our business. Unfortunately, most business still use regular plastic polybags to distribute their items. It is estimated that 180 polybags are produced each year globally

THINK RECYCLABLE, THINK AGAIN!

Recyclable polybags is one alternative option. However, this relies on the user to discard the bag in the correct way. Furthermore, even the plastic that is put in the recycling unfortunately does not always get recycled! A report by the Guardian newspaper outlines the inefficiencies of Britain’s recycling infrastructure, explaining that a lot actually ends up being burnt. The article even claims that “some councils have debated giving up recycling altogether. And yet the UK is a successful recycling nation: 45.7% of all household waste is classed as recycled (although that number indicates only that it is sent for recycling, not where it ends up.)”.

BIODEGRADABLE MAKES THE GRADE!

After further research on alternative packaging choices, we were impressed with the eco-tech concept of oxo-biodegradable packaging. While there are of course cheaper options, if we don’t pay the price, the planet and it’s wildlife will! The WWF claim that 100,000 marine mammals, such as whales and dolphins die every year as a result of plastic pollution. We are therefore proud to partner with Echo Packaging (a member of Operation Clean Sweep) to produce what we believe to be the most ecologically sound packaging solution.

Our bags are made from biodegradable polythene, (which includes a prodegradant catalyst - Reverte™) tested in accordance with ASTM6954-04 standards. This allows the polythene to degrade and then biodegrade by conversion into small-chain organic chemicals, such as ketones, alcohols, carboxylic acids, and low molecular mass hydrocarbon waxes. The remaining chemicals are no longer plastic and are biodegradable by bacteria. Furthermore the bags also contain recycled material to begin with.

SPREAD THE WORD!

While we are proud for our business to maintain its own environmental standards, we are aware that a lot more can be done.  Never more so than right now. One of the many negative effects of the Covid outbreak has been a general increase in consumer plastic use. Technology commentators The Vergehave reported a backward step, which sees a re-emergence of plastic bags being preferred to reusable shopping totes, despite no evidence that they can transmit the virus. The repeated and extensive national lockdowns have also lead to a boom in online shopping, as well as people selling their own items on marketplaces such as Ebay. This of course means a lot more plastic mail bags.

We have therefore, recently decided to make our own oxo-biodegradable postal bags available for public purchase, alongside our Protexa products in order to promote and expand their use as much as possible. If you are interested in choosing eco-friendly packaging, you can purchase some here at £1.99 for 10 bags, including postage.

ARE THERE ANY LONG TERM HEALTH RISKS FROM WEARING A FACE MASK?

September 26, 2020 4 min read

While it is important to take measures to protect ourselves from external threats, such as bacteria and viruses, in doing so we must not forget one of the main principles of bioethics taught to medical students across the World: "Primum non nocere" (First, do no harm). The health related side effects of covering our breathing pathway long-term are currently unknown. However, there may be reasons to tread with caution. Concerns surround possible inhilation of plastics in disposable masks, chemicals in synthetic fabrics and pesticides used on non-organic cotton.

ARE THERE ANY ECZEMA FRIENDLY FACE MASKS?

September 10, 2020 2 min read

With 1 in 5 children and 1 in 12 adults in the UK suffering with eczema, and the on-going mandate to wear face coverings in the UK unlikely to be lifted soon, eczema-friendly masks are becoming an increasingly important part of people’s wardrobes.

Eczema, or dermatitis, is an inflammatory skin condition which can affect people from birth into old age. The skin is often dry and itchy, which can become cracked and sore without treatment. Patients report that changes in weather and temperature, skincare products, laundry products and clothing can impact on their skin health.

WHAT TO THINK ABOUT WHEN BUYING CHILDREN FACE MASKS

August 29, 2020 2 min read

In the latest government U-turn, Boris Johnson this week announced that children returning to school in September should wear face masks, to help limit the spread of Coronavirus.

However, this decision has proven to be a controversial one, sparking much debate around the topic. Concerns about the health and comfort of wearing face masks for long periods of time, as well as the huge environmental costs of disposable masks, continue to persist.

So, what should concerned parents consider before sending their little ones back to the classroom?
